Re: Longwood Gardens
April 14, 2009 by jrslater
We had a blast this past Saturday. Longwood Gardens is a very beautiful and very huge place. There is a possibility of a second trip later this year.
Longwood Gardens
March 16, 2009 by jrslater
What: Bus trip from Brunswick to Longwood Gardens in Kennett
Square, PA (just south of Philadelphia) and Winterthur Mansion nearby
in Delaware. Both are DuPont estates.
www.longwoodgardens.com
www.winterthur.org
When & Where: Saturday April 11, 2009, leaving Brunswick at 6:30 a.m. from the commuter train parking lot to arrive at Longwood Gardens by 9:00 a.m. and returning to Brunswick at 6:30 p.m. that evening. Tripods are allowed at Longwood Gardens from 9-noon and at anytime on the Winterthur grounds, but not at all inside the mansion.
Cost: $60 per person. This includes the bus, tickets to both Longwood Gardens and Winterthur and gratuity for the bus driver.
Why: Because we like to see and photograph beautiful flowers. Bring your tripod and macro lenses and be prepared to be amazed and capture some of the best images you'll ever take.
Other info: We need at least 25 people to make this trip a go, so it is open to ANYONE who wants to go, not just photogs. So feel free to invite anyone you think would enjoy it, but do invite folks from other camera clubs because we will be watching photography DVDs on the bus. The bus DOES have an onboard bathroom. Lunch is on our own. There is a restaurant at Longwood Gardens that offers both full service and cafe style or we can find a local restaurant before going to Winterthur. We'll get a consensus the week before on what everyone would like to do.
DEADLINE: I need money from everyone by ASAP so I can confirm in plenty of time with the motorcoach company. You can send me cash or check in the mail or I can take PayPal. If paying by PayPal, tack on an extra $2 because that's the fee they will charge me for receiving the payment.

2008 All Army Photography Contest
February 3, 2009 by jrslater
Don't know where else to put this so if this isn't the right place for it, please move it or delete it.
Last November I submitted 18 photographs to an All Army Photography zContest, I just found out that 16 out of 18 of those images have made it to the final round of judging at the Department of the Army level of the contest. I won't know exactly how I placed until later this week.
I'm amazed that even one of the images were considered, but am thrilled beyond belief that I have 16 in the running. I'll post here when I find out any news.
Here's a link to some of the images I submitted:

WV Writers Contest Open for Entries
January 5, 2009 by jrslater
WV Writers Contest Open for Entries TODAY!
The 2009 West Virginia Writers, Inc. Annual Writing Competition is now officially accepting entries.
Please note, things have changed a little bit with the contest this year.
Entry fees for the contest are now set at $10 each (except for the book-length prose category, which is set at $12 each). However, a new feature in the rules of the contest is that every third entry is absolutely free. That's right, you can submit three entries for the price of two, or six entries for the price of four, etc. There's no limit. And if you do the math, under last year's $8 per entry fee, you'd pay $24 for three submissions; this year, you'll pay only $20. In other words, it pays to submit more than two entries.
Be sure to pay attention to the address you send your entries to. We have a new contest administrator this year, Mr. Stephen Goff of the Salem area. He'll be taking all your entries and sending them out to our judges.
And this year we have removed the $1 handling fee per mailing (saving you even more).
For the youth, we have now combined our annual high school competition as part of our student form. This form now has three separate age categories, Grades 1-5, Grades 6-8 and Grades 9-12, with prizes of $100 for 1st, $50 for 2nd and $25 for 3rd place in each age group.
Please visit our contest page for all the details and for copies of our entry forms.
Re: Martinsburg Photography Club
December 31, 2008 by jrslater
Okay, the name has changed and it's still a very loose organization. We've renamed the organization to The Eastern Panhandle Photography club, open to all who have an interest in photography. First meeting hasn't been scheduled but probably won't happen until late into January, 2009.

That is cool. I'll have to check this out.
Re: Parkersburg Art Center

You are right and thanks for the clarification. I also agree Art Berkeley has done some wonderful things and the future looks darned good for the organization.
Re: Parkersburg Art Center
December 2, 2008 by jrslater
how do we build a community-wide critical mass that might generate the resources to make a start?
This is a very difficult question and I don't have a clue on where to start. One issue that would be raised is why have two art centers when we can barely put together and maintain the one we have now? I do like the idea of a location that has mutliple galleries available for local artis's use.
Martinsburg Photography Club
November 6, 2008 by jrslater
There has been some slight interest in a photography club in the Martinsburg area. We had been meeting at the Martinsburg Public Library in the past but due to falling interest, we stopped meeting. If there is anyone out there willing to get together and meet, we can start it up again.
The group is open to anyone intersted in photography, of any skill level with any type of camera, film or digital.
